“Tollywood” is the sobriquet for the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Telugu language. Telugu is one of twenty-two scheduled languages used in India, standing alongside Hindi, English and Bengali, as one of the few languages with official primary language status in more than one Indian state, ranking as the language with the fourth highest number of native speakers in the country.

The Mumbai-centered Bollywood, has in recent years enjoyed a 40-50 percent share of total box office revenue across the Indian sub-continent, but the beginning of 2017 saw an unusual number of flops and disappointments, resulting in a shockingly low share of just 31 percent, down from its previous 42 percent share from the preceding year. The opposite can be said for Tollywood films, as in the first half of 2017 alone, it took an unprecedented 42 percent of the national box office. Telugu films like Arjun Reddy, Mental Madhilo and Malli Raava are proof of Tollywood success, however, most of the box office success for such period belonged to the S.S. Rajamouli film, Baahubali: The Conclusion. The trend has been set and Tollywood films show no signs of slowing down, as in the States, the club of films crossing $1 million in their US opening weekend in 2018, features more Telugu than Bollywood films.
